The NJFA is a unique national research and information centre available to jazz enthusiasts, students and the general public. It is well stocked with rare books, discographies, periodicals, photographs and memorabilia.

The collection has an emphasis on British material but foreign works, particularly American, are also collected. It has substantial runs of all major jazz magazines past and present including Cadence, Downbeat, Jazz Journal, Jazz News, Melody Maker, Memory Lane, Mississippi Rag and Wire. Current publications are purchased and the Archive acts as a repository, to safeguard scarce and older materiaL, by accepting donations and bequests. The materials are for use on the premises. (Note: the Archive is not a repository for recorded music, sheet music, band parts).

Requests for services and information can be made in person, by telephone or by post. Enquiries are answered by specialist staff. Telephone: 0181 502 0181.

The NJFA maintains a close links with the national Sound Archive and the British Institute Of Jazz Studies; together these three organisations form one of the largest jazz research collections outside the USA. With the support of Essex County Council, it enjoys accomodation, staff assistance and secure storage of its valuable materials.

However, to enable the collection to continue and grow, extra funds are always needed to improve facilities, to make important purchases and to expand the collection.
