Introduction

As well as on records, vintage music was recorded for films during the 78 rpm era. Record collectors are always delighted to find film of their favourite band, singer, or their favourite songs from the dance band era but good lists of films are hard to find. I am attempting to list

1. all the early films that feature British dance bands or songs and music performed by British entertainers during 1929-1949.

Click BACK for the listings, or return to Film listings page

I am indebted to the pages of the 'Memory Lane' magazine for many of the film titles, and the book 'Film Making in 1930s Britain', by Rachael Low (1985). For many additions and song titles I am grateful to Terry Brown and his references, particularly Entertainers In British Films by Denis Gifford (1998).
All film lists in this website format are (c) John A B Wright/Terry Brown, 1999-2003
There are also two useful Internet sites, the Internet Movie Database and the All-Movie Guide.

There are still many gaps, particularly of songs/music featured in British films, and need confirmation that bands are seen as well as heard. So I am looking for your help: please view the films listings and let me know if you can fill in any of the gaps, e-mail me.

If you know of other websites or books dealing with old British movies that might have useful information then please e-mail me.

(last update 21 Oct 2000)

I have constructed similar 'music in the movies' listings for American films,1927-1949, see Films pages list. As well as the popular 'musicals' I have included also many films which feature one or just a few songs or pieces of music.
