In Europe
- Peter Harrison writes:
When I started working professionally with audio, 78rpm records were still on sale! In my studio in
the beautiful New Forest, disk2disc transcribes, restores, and re-masters recorded sound from
sources ranging from acoustical 78s to DMM LPs; from the earliest reel-to-reel master tapes to
home-made cassettes; from 1930s metal disks to DVDs. We welcome private clients with all kinds
of recorded material (from baby gurgles to Polish punk; from baroque Dutch organs to German jazz
bands). About half our work is destined for commercial release, demanding the highest possible
quality. (Last year a CD that we mastered from the original digital recordings was voted No. 6 in
the Mojo Best folk album of the Year!) The same experience, expertise, and equipment that we
use for the commercial work is applied to all the jobs we do, no matter how small, and we pride
ourselves on our friendly personal relationship with our private clients, many of whom have returned
several times with further work for us - a sure sign of their satisfaction.

- John Shaw writes:
"For 22 years I have been offering an audio restoration service in the South East of England. After several years working as a sound engineer in radio and television studios - (educational and associated BBC projects), I started trading as SHAW SOUNDS in November 1981.
Having links with the BBC over the years has allowed me to build up on studio equipment such as Studer, Leevers Rich, Otari, Revox and Spendor. My studio offers a range of digital and analogue equipment using 'Cedar' processing units for all restoration work.
My website brings in work from all over the country as well as projects from Canada and Germany. My main work is the conversion of reel to reel archive tape, 78rpm records and vinyl discs. I am amazed how much demand there is for the transfer of these formats to CD".

I offer a professional service (used by the BBC and
several record companies) using CEDAR and other computer-based processes.
I deal only with electrical recordings and, although most of my
business is concerned with LP and 45 transfers, have done quite a
lot of 78 work including all the LP and 78 transfers used in BBC
Radio 2 'Legends Of Light Music' series, 5 of the London Palladium
Orchestra series issued by Frank Bristow of Australia and recently
archived the whole of the Bosworth background Music library from
the original 78's and master tapes onto around 90 CD's. I am also
equipped to handle DAT, MiniDisc, cassettes, 1/4" tape at 1 7/8 i.p.s. to 30
i.p.s, 1/4, 1/2 and Full Track. So far as I know, I am the only person
in Scotland offering an Audio Restoration service.

I've been working in audio for about 30 years (broadcast production and
fully digital home studio) and about two years ago became fascinated with
digital audio restoration. Of course, that includes the cleaning etc of the
source material as well.

- Goran Soderwall writes :
I have issued three CD's with historical material.
Two CD's of the great German violinist Georg Kulenkampff and a CD with Hjordis Schymberg
very often the superb artist singing against Jussi Bjorling. I have sold well and
there have been pleas especially from Japan to issue more Kulenkampff and other historical artists of the same calibre.
I do my transfers using only tubed equipment, an EMT turntable, and the unrivalled Ortofon-C MC cartridges with
different stylii. I also have Shure V-15-III and IV with special 78
diamond tips. For correction of different EQ I use a unit from SELA
an old Swedish firm, now defunct, specialised in serving radio
stations and the Swedish Radio in the 1950s. Still I have to hear
something that makes 78s sound better than with these Ortofon MCs
and this SELA unit for correct equalisation.

- Al Simmons writes: I can offer some service for copying 78's to CD usually as a
special project or a favor to a friend and to my 78-l pals. I can do a bit of cleaning up through my
graphic equalizer but nothing spectacular.(I use a free-standing Philips dual tray CD-R Recording unit.)
However, my primary and preferred activity is to accomodate want list requests from my archive of 65,000
78rpm sides(1917 to 1950+-) and to transfer that jazz and hot dance material onto CD's for trades or at a price.
I'm really not familiar with, nor equipped to do, the packing and shipping of 78's. Mine is usually an in-house
operation. I transfer the requested material onto CD's from my own collection. If I can help anyone e-mail

e-mail me if you'd like to be added to this list.
I'd also like to hear about results from enquiries.
Most new PC's come equipped with CD writers so many 78 collectors are now able to put their own favourite music onto CD. Go to my very brief page on How to get the sound of 78's on to your PC
